I Don’t Feel Like Myself Anymore: Finding Your Way Back to You

One of the most common things I hear from women with Hashimoto’s and hypothyroidism isn’t a specific symptom. It’s this:

“I just don’t feel like myself anymore.”

Yes, there’s the fatigue, the bloating, the weight gain and the brain fog. But almost always, there’s also a sense of having lost a part of yourself along the way.

It really made me pause and reflect on why that is. What is it about living with a thyroid condition that can leave us feeling disconnected from who we really are?

After speaking with clients and reflecting on my own journey, I’ve come to believe there are two foundational root causes behind this loss of self.

1. The thyroid condition itself, and what I call the thyroid experience

Living with a thyroid condition can affect so much more than our physical health.

There are the symptoms that impact our quality of life but are often invisible to the people around us. The subtle changes in our appearance and how it feels to live in our bodies every day. The unsettling experience of looking in the mirror and not quite recognising the person looking back.

Then there are the everyday frustrations. The doctors who don’t seem to understand. The people around us who don’t quite get it. The irritability, the shorter fuse, the struggle to be fully present and the knock-on effects on our relationships.

For many of us, there’s also a growing preoccupation with our health.

After years of feeling dismissed or gaslit by doctors, we can become hyper-focused on our symptoms. We spend hours researching, Googling and looking for validation, understanding and solutions.

Over time, this can lead to a profound shift in identity. We start to see ourselves through the lens of being sick, forgetting who we are beyond the condition itself.

That carefree, joyful part of us can feel as though it’s slowly disappearing.

I know this happened to me quite early on in my own journey. I felt frustrated with my body, almost disappointed in it. I also struggled with health anxiety for a good while, convinced that my thyroid issue was just the beginning and that we were simply waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Add in symptoms like fatigue and brain fog, which can leave you with barely enough energy to work and sleep, and the things that make you you begin to take a back seat.

Hobbies, socialising, spontaneity, pleasure and connection. All the things that make life feel like life.

It’s no wonder we can end up feeling like strangers to ourselves.

2. When healing your thyroid becomes your entire personality

This one can sneak up on you.

At first, it’s exciting. You finally feel as though you’re back in control, fuelled by hope and the possibility of feeling better.

You start eliminating this and adding that. You build the perfect 20-step morning routine. You experiment with supplements, thyroid optimisation hacks and different protocols. You find one expert to follow, then another.

Do this. Don’t do that.

And before you know it, your healing journey is determining almost every life choice you make.

Suddenly, fear creeps in. There’s self-blame and guilt for not doing enough, alongside an ever-growing need for control.

There’s always more to do. More to eliminate. More to optimise. More to worry about.

Cue more perceived danger, more nervous system dysregulation and, potentially, healing that feels increasingly out of reach.

This was very much my story.

Once I realised there was so much I could do to feel better, I decided I was going to do it perfectly. I effectively made healing my full-time job on top of my actual full-time job.

I followed the protocols, took all the supplements and did all the testing. I cut out all the so-called problematic foods and removed toxins from my environment.

And somewhere along the way, I cut out a lot of the joy and pleasure, too.

Yes, my lab results started to improve. But my life was getting smaller, and I was losing sight of who I really was beyond my thyroid condition.

At some point, I realised something had to change.

Fast forward ten years, and I’m in full remission. I also live my life to the fullest. Health is important to me, but it doesn’t determine every single choice I make.

And that distinction matters.

Because healing shouldn’t require us to sacrifice the very things that make life worth living.

A kinder way to heal your thyroid

In my practice, I combine functional nutrition with mind-body practices and deep nervous system work to help women find their way back to themselves.

I’ve made it my mission to change the Hashimoto’s and hypothyroidism healing narrative and show women that there is a lighter, kinder way to approach this journey.

If you recognise yourself in the words above, if that feeling of having lost a part of yourself rings true, please know that another way is possible.

We can work on the underlying factors contributing to our thyroid symptoms without sacrificing who we are in the process.

We can eat and live in ways that support our health while still experiencing pleasure, connection and joy.

We can work with our patterns, step out of the symptoms spiral and find ways to navigate health anxiety.

We can find our tribe and surround ourselves with people who truly understand what we’re going through.

This journey isn’t about reinventing ourselves or becoming some shiny, new and improved version of who we are.

It’s about finding a way back home.

I want you to know that meaningful healing isn’t about restrictions or dedicating our entire existence to the process.

But it also doesn’t come from indecision or endlessly tiptoeing around the things that might help us. There comes a point when we need to commit to putting ourselves first.

Not through fear, punishment or perfectionism, but through a genuine commitment to our wellbeing.

What if you could feel like yourself again?

Imagine having more energy for the things you love. Feeling more at ease in your body. Being able to make choices without constantly worrying about whether you’re doing something wrong.

Imagine prioritising your health without your condition becoming your entire identity.

This is what my signature BLOOM programme is all about.

Yes, we’ll work on the underlying factors contributing to your thyroid condition, with the aim of improving your symptoms and supporting your overall health.

Because you are so much more than your diagnosis.

And you deserve a life that feels like yours again.

If you’re ready to explore a kinder, more sustainable approach to thyroid healing, I’d love to welcome you into BLOOM.
