Did you know that most thyroid disorders start in the gut? This is where the entire journey to recovery begins. Your gut can lead to thyroid healing. That is backed by heaps of research and walking-talking-feeling-so-much-better examples.
90% of women with a thyroid problem I work with struggle with bloating, constipation & heartburn. Even without those ‘digestive issues’ the gut is still most likely compromised, fuelling typical ‘thyroid symptoms’ incl. fatigue, weigh gain and brain fog.
All thyroid disorders are rooted in systemic inflammation caused by ‘leaky’ gut, imbalances in gut microbiome, food intolerances and issues with absorption.
The gut is where your thyroid issue started and where the healing must begin
I find the whole gut- thyroid connection absolutely fascinating and want to share my fascination with you, my loves! Every single one of my one-to-one clients goes through a comprehensive gut healing protocol. My soon-to-be-launched again, life changing group programme Thyroid Reboot 3.0 will focus on gut healing.
I continue to be amazed with the improvement in symptoms we see EVERY SINGLE TIME. I know I kind of preach to the converted. I know you all realise how important this step is. But if you’re a little sceptical, don’t dismiss it as ‘not thyroid related’. Trust this is where the entire journey to recovery begins.
Genetical Predisposition
Firstly, you need a ‘wonky’ gene, a genetical predisposition that makes you susceptible to a thyroid disorder (mostly researched for Hashimoto’s/ Graves, which account for 90% of hypo/hyper cases).
Thyroid issues tend to run in families, HOWEVER, it’s important to realise that genes are not our destiny. We have an ability to activate/ deactivate the gene depending on specific environmental triggers/ lifestyle choices.
You’re more likely to develop another autoimmune condition if you already have one (even more reason to get to that root cause!)
Gut Dysbiosis, Poor Absorbtion, Gut Permeability
Then you the need an ‘enabling environment’. Gut permeability directly leads to a development and worsening of chronic autoimmune conditions like Hashimoto’s and food sensitivities. It’s also likely to be fuelling your day-to-day symptoms. Gut dysbiosis and inflammation are the leading causes of the ‘leaky gut’.
IMPORTANT:Your gut needs a little love & attention even if you don’t suffer from textbook digestive symptoms.
A Trigger or Trauma
And finally there’s usually a trigger, an event or exposure that ‘activates’ the gene. Common triggers known to lead to a development of a thyroid disorder include:
- hormonal changes like pregnancy, menopause,
- toxic exposures,
- too much iodine,
- exposure to environmental toxins
- bacterial and viral infections,
- physical and emotional trauma and more!
