The Story Behind My Weight Journey

I took a bathroom selfie at the gym a few days ago and realised (to my surprise!) that I quite like what I see in the mirror.

But it wasn’t always like that.

I sometimes hear from clients/ people in my community… “you wouldn’t understand my weight struggles, you look like you’re naturally slim.”

Well, that couldn’t be further from the truth.

Before the Transformation

For most of my twenties and some of my thirties, I was on a constant weight rollercoaster. I was never severely overweight, but my weight would easily fluctuate +/- 10kgs. I would retain water like crazy, my weight would go onto my hips, legs and face. The face was always the worst, literally making me look like a different person.

Ok, this next bit is not easy as I have never shared this photo before. I’m not one to boast about my ‘before and after’. But then I thought, sod it, if my ‘transformation’ inspires even one person, it’s worth sharing. I had to reach out to a friend of mine who took these, to retrieve them, as I got rid of all of my old photos a long time ago. Here it is:

This was me, circa 28, just after my Hypothyroidism/Hashimoto’s diagnosis, already on Levo. I was overworked, super stressed and emotionally drained by a very toxic relationship I was in at the time. I was always exhausted, my anxiety was through the roof and I felt so weak I couldn’t even get through a yoga class let alone maintain any sort of exercise routine. I was constantly on some sort of diet, even tried the Cambridge shake diet for a bit (I did lose weight only to put it back on, and then some).

I was completely disconnected from my body.

I look at this photo and feel a little sad. I want to reach out to the past Aggie and give her a long hug. You will be ok. You will find a way back to your body.

Finding Balance and Health

This was me the other day, in the gym (well, the gym’s bathroom to be precise 😅). My body might not be perfect (it doesn’t need to be) but the difference is PROFOUND. I feel healthy and bloody strong. My body feels like it belongs to me. I am not on a diet. I don’t restrict calories. I exercise 3 or 4 times a week. Nothing extreme. I still have takeaways now and again, and I’ll have a couple squares of chocolate most days. Food brings me joy and pleasure and exercise never feels like punishment or a way to earn back calories. I also have no idea how much I weigh and I’m telling you that’s a wonderful place to be.

The Importance of Working With Your Body

The reason I am where I am today is because I learned how to work WITH my body, not against it. I discovered the imbalances that slowed down my metabolism and made my body store fat (and water!) like crazy. I vowed to not punish my body with restrictions and instead see food as nourishment. I focused on lowering inflammation, regulating my blood sugar and lowering my cortisol levels. I learned about leptin and ghrelin and their role in regulating appetite. I mastered fasting in a way that’s safe for my thyroid and my hormones (there was a lot of trial and error there!).

Slowly, gradually, my body started to find its way back to balance.

The truth is though, it took many years to get here. My thyroid weight loss journey took years of learning and unlearning, trying different healing approaches.
